The Hydrogen Economy -
the most likely alternative and successor to the economy, based on carbon combustibles

Several reasons to prove the fulfillment of this sustainable tendency …

Current Economy, based on carbon and hydrocarbon combustibles

The current economy is more and more facing its limitations to solve the world energy problem. Limited carbon and hydrocarbon based resources for the production of energy and combustibles are globally deployed amongst fissured associations of owners and highly dependent on speculative actions of international finance markets.

Description

The international energy (electricity) production is more then 80% based on carbon combustion.

The international traffic sector (private and commercial) is more then 90% dependent on combustibles, produced from Hydrocarbons (Petroleum, Natural Gas) or Carbon (Coal-to-Liquid).

Pro

  • The technologies are highly developed and globally deployed
  • Environmental contamination reduction measures will be applied increasingly

Contra

  • Carbon and Hydrocarbon based resources are limited and will disappear in a few decades
  • Accordingly artificially caused shortages and price speculations will cause unavoidable global economic crisis in transportation and dependent industries
  • National governments will probably be challenged to prevent or solve these kind of crisis in time and on their own, but joint efforts are unlikely due to political discrepancies and individual local interests
  • Application of contamination reduction measures is very cost intensive and accordingly in the majority of national economies unaffordable and unenforceable

Present energy production based on sustainable resources

There are various forms presently used to produce energy based on sustainable resources …

Energy generation and usage from resources locally available

  • Mechanical energy from water and wind mills
  • Electrical energy from:
    • Local rivers and existing hydroelectric power plants
    • Combustion of household and bio waste
    • Photovoltaic and thermal Solar Cells (on top of buildings)
  • Thermal energy from local geothermic resources

Pro

  • Very brave!

Contra

  • But not yet auto sustained!

Future energy production based on sustainable resources

In the future we’ll face a variety of arising and promising new methods to produce energy based on sustainable resources …

There are various new tips to produce electrical energy and potentially H2

New generations of producers:

  • Solar systems:
    • Existent: Photovoltaic (supported by the law and distributed in a growing quantity on top of commercial, public and private properties)
    • Applied: Solar thermal power plants (approved and already applied for continuously energy production)
    • Approved: Solar Chimney Power Plants (in pilot application status)
  • Wind power systems of the communities
  • Biomass and waste gasification plants, to solve the waste problem the communities by simultaneously producing additional electrical energy
  • Future: The H2 production through High Temperature Electrolysis (HTE: 750-1000 °C) in the environment of nuclear power plants, completed by appropriate system for the H2 distribution in liquid or gasified form

Hydrogen (H2) – The clean solution (Energy Vector) for local generation, transportation and storage of energy?

There are several reasons to believe in it!

  • H2 can be produced locally from water and electrical energy, based on whatever kind of resource
  • The technology for the H2 storage and transportation is far advanced
  • The energy conversion rate via H2 is continuously increasing
    • Fuel Cells
    • Internal combustion engine (ICT)
  • H2 as an energy medium causes 0% contamination

Pro

  • Sustainable resources disposable without limits
  • Energy transformation from sustainable resources occurs almost without environmental contamination

Contra

  • How do carbon and hydrocarbon industries pro-actively and responsibly support the role shifting towards electrical and hydrogen power transformation industries..?

Hydrogen Economy

The rising of the Hydrogen Economy…

Description

A dynamic balance of electrical energy, mainly produced based on sustainable resources (distributed through the Green Power Grid), and the Chemical Energy (Green H2) produced and utilized in an autonomous and mobile form at whatever location, and to be transformed into mechanical energy via Fuel Cells / electric engines or H2 Internal combustion engines

  • The various producer will share their electrical energy (Green) with the community power grids
  • Locally produced (Electrolysis: transformation of electrical into chemical energy) H2, its storage and the utilization of its chemical energy via re-transformation (Fuel Cells – i.e for air condition o internal combustion engine) into autonomous and mobile electrical energy

Pro

  • Liberalization of global energy markets could be the result.

Contra

  • How can this liberalization be performed as a win-win for all participants…?

Communities of Sustainable Energies: responsible for sustainable and ecological energy production/provisioning, maintenance and usage

The pre-conditions for partially self-sustaining Energy Communities could be established soon…

Description

Local communities could take on the role, to produce, buy and pole the amount of necessary electrical energy, to be provided to their private, public and commercial members

Establishment of Green Energy Card for all Community members:

  • To get a choice of valued contributions to efficient energy balance of their community, by accumulating on their Virtual Money Accounts (like Credit Card) equivalent amounts of:
    • Contributions to the communities energy production
    • Collected points of proven and sustained actions to Energy Efficiency and Reduction of environmental contaminations
  • To support the production of electrical energy through:
    • Photovoltaic implementations on their properties, delivering the produced power into the community power grid
    • Contributing their usual waste (Household, Office, Production, etc.)
    • Contributing their Bio-Waste or Bio-Mass
  • To collect bonus points for efficient usage of electrical energy and reduced environmental contamination:
    • Improve their Efficient Energy Housing
    • Driving of Efficient Energy and Reduced Contamination Vehicles

Usage of the Green Energy Card and the gained equivalents of virtual money amounts to pay for:

  • Used electrical power
  • Used fresh water and recycled waste water
  • Usual community contributions (street light, cleaning, waste management etc.)
  • Hydrogen obtained from the community owned Hydrogen station

In order to provide these modern community services, the communities will have to install, dependent on their size, a network of:

  • Community Power Grid, internally connected to the local producers of electrical power and externally connected to the wide range producers of electrical power
  • Selected waste collection and accordingly special energy transformation services (i.e. Bio and Industry Waste gasification plants)
  • Red of local Hydrogen stations (independently or as add on blocks to existing gas stations), with local Hydrogen production (Power Electrolysis plants) and storage (gas, liquid)
  • Appropriate services to support community members in their efforts to improve the energy efficiency and the reduction of environmental contamination on local their buildings and vehicles

Pro

  • The communities and their members take on more responsibility about an ecological and sustainable energy balance.

Contra

  • …?
